Division of Administration

As a high-volume, high-acuity academic Department of Emergency Medicine, there are innumerable moving pieces that allow us to provide world-class care to over 90,000 patients/year.   In our Administration Division, we work together with leaders within our Department, as well as with leaders from other Hospital and WellSpan Departments and Divisions to facilitate the smooth, safe and efficient operations of our Department with the goals of high reliability and continuous improvement.


Areas that we focus on as Administrators include, but are not limited to:


Operational Management
– Department workflow and throughput
– Provider staffing and scheduling
– Crisis and surge Management 

Clinical Oversight and Leadership
– Support and supervise our Providers in the delivery of Emergency Care
·- Oversee credentialing and privileging with necessary Hospital Committees

Quality Improvement and Patient Safety
– Monitor performance metrics
– Implement quality improvement programs
– Review all incidents and safety/experience concerns

Finance and Resource Management
– Partner with Operational leaders over budgeting and cost control
– Resource allocation

Regulatory Compliance
– Creation and compliance with Departmental Policies
– Adherence to hospital, State and Federal Policies
– Promoting accurate, timely, and thorough charting and documentation

Strategic Planning
– Program Development for new services, protocols and technologies
– Interdepartmental Collaboration
– Community Engagement
– Staffing and Recruiting

Academic-Administration Liaison
– Partnering with our Residency Leadership Team to optimize the academic and educational environment of our ED
– Oversight and mentoring of resident PI projects in the ED

We utilize regular meetings within our Department that include Nursing, Physician, APP and Residency Leaders, as well as with the many support and ancillary services that assist us in our operations, including:  IT, Security, EVS, Patient Support Specialists, and Behavioral Health Counselors.

Our Physician Leadership Team includes our Chair, Dr. Jeffrey Lazar, and Vice-Chair and Medical Director, Dr. Jess Riley;  Dr. Tom Yeich, Director of Quality, Dr. Justin Koch, Director of Clinical Informatics and Scheduling, and our Administrative Assistants, Steph Bowser and Marcy Zabaski.   We also incorporate an Administrative Resident, who performs an Administration Rotation as part of their PGY-3 year.
