YHEM Residency

Dr. Avram Flamm joined YHEM in 2023 and has overseen the development of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) at WellSpan Health. As System EMS Medical Director, he provides strategic leadership and oversight for prehospital care, medical direction, EMS quality and EMS education across the WellSpan Health system. Dr. Flamm collaborates with local, regional, and state EMS organizations to ensure high-quality, evidence-based prehospital care and fosters strong relationships with EMS providers and agencies across the region. Dr. Flamm serves as the Pennsylvania ACEP EMS committee co-chair, on the national ACEP EMS and Disaster Medicine committees, on multiple NAEMSP committees, local and regional EMS Medical Advisory Committees, PHESC Board of Directors. Dr. Flamm also serves as a Medical Team Manager for FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Pennsylvania Task Force 1 and has deployed to disasters across the US.  

At YHEM, Dr. Flamm leads the division of EMS that oversees WellSpan York Hospital EMS operations, EMS physician education, and EMS academics. EM residents are offered a comprehensive array of educational opportunities to immerse themselves in EMS and prehospital medicine. Our longitudinal EMS curriculum ensures consistent learning and skill development throughout residency. Highlights include an EMS orientation day featuring fire rescue simulations, air medical exposure, and hands-on EMS activities. Residents can engage in ride-along experiences with BLS, ALS, and physician response vehicles, as well as participate in ground critical care and air medical transport operations. For those interested in EMS medical director leadership, the Resident Assistant EMS Medical Director program provides an invaluable chance to explore the roles and responsibilities of EMS medical direction. Additionally, residents are invited to participate in EMS-focused research and publications, with opportunities to present their findings at local, regional, and national conferences. These experiences prepare residents to excel in both clinical and administrative aspects of emergency medicine and EMS leadership.
