Dr. Scott Williams serves as the Co-Director of the WellSpan York Hospital Center for Global Health Education. His first exposure to global heatlh was when he volunteered as a high school math and science teacher in South Africa, leading to a lifelong interest in global development. He has worked as clinical faculty in the Department of Emergency Medicine at WellSpan York Hospital since 2012. In his role, Dr. Williams has developed a training program to provide opportunities for residents interested in global health to work clinically in underserved communities abroad.

The Center for Global Health Education provides local and international learning opportunities with international rotations in low-resource settings. During these cross-cultural trips, residents gain valuable experience in cultural humility and social determinants of health while helping to improve the lives of children and adults living in low- and middle-income countries. The global health training benefits the global community and ultimately develops quality physicians who are well-equipped to serve their own communities.

EM residents are offered the opportunity to be part of a longitudinal global health track. In addition to travel abroad, residents may also pursue local opportunities and experiences. In recent years EM residents have done electives in Ghana, Guatemala, Lebanon, and India as well as Alaska and the Indian Health Service in New Mexico. Further opportunities are available in Ethiopia, Mauritania and Kurdistan.
