She has also completed the ACEP teaching fellowship. She stayed on as faculty at WellSpan York Hospital and has held the position of Associate Program Director for the Emergency Medicine Residency for the past four years. Her focus as APD is in Resident Education, with concentrations in the areas of Pediatric Education and Quality Improvement. Dr. Piccoli currently heads the Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) resident interest track and is course director for the Advanced Pediatric Life Support (APLS) course and leads the pediatric airway section of the Difficult Airway course. The YHED serves all patient populations. There is no separate pediatric pod. Residents see pediatric patients every shift and have exposure to all seasonal variations of pediatric pathology. With no Pediatric ICU, high acuity pediatric patients remain the responsibility of our ED team until subsequent transfer to specialist PICU facilities. Residents spend time on the pediatric service as well as the NICU service to gain exposure to the entire age spectrum of pediatric patients. With all resuscitation and procedures performed by our residents, YHEM graduates are well prepared to work in any environment with confidence in managing acute complications of any pediatric pathology. Residents also spend one month at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) to gain further exposure to pediatric emergency care.
The PEM interest track is designed not only for those interested in pursuing fellowship, but also those who want to expand their overall experience in pediatric care. In order to prepare track participants for experience in this field, residents have opportunities to participate in a PEM focused journal club, give PEM resident lectures of their own design, and participate in PEM simulations. Residents in this track also have the option of participating in pediatric QA and PI projects. During their elective month, PGY3s have the opportunity to further their experience with additional pediatric rotations (e.g. PICU) based on their interest.
