Division of Medical Toxicology
Dr. Michelle Hieger is the medical director of YHEM’s division of Medical Toxicology. She also serves as the director of the Medical Toxicology interest track and medical student rotation. She has been working at WellSpan York hospital since 2016 after graduating from the medical toxicology fellowship at VCU. She developed the inpatient toxicology service while also continuing to work in the emergency department as faculty. She also serves on the ACMT (American College of Medical Toxicology) education committee.
YHEM provides a longitudinal track of toxicology education for residents. This involves both classic lecture-based teaching as well as hands-on simulation. Rarely is there a shift in our emergency department without some sort of consideration for a toxicological exposure! There is an interest track for Medical Toxicology as well as Addiction Medicine that PGY3s can choose during their elective month. There is also an elective for MS4/OMS4 students to work alongside the Toxicology service. This team sees consults in the emergency department as well as on the inpatient side. They work closely with the poison control center in the management of these patients. Residents and students are also involved with the Suboxone Bridge service to help people who have substance use disorders. Residents have access to many national and international lectures and conferences. There are also daily topics available through the ATEAM. The PGY3 elective provides a spectrum of opportunities from simply increasing exposure to the world of toxicology all the way up to mentoring for fellowship. YHEM has now had 3 graduates who pursued a medical toxicology fellowship, as well as another who pursued fellowship in addiction medicine.
