We’ve been training Emergency Medicine physicians since 1988! Our ED was completely renovated in 2017. We recruit 13 diverse residents per year.
Level 1 Trauma Center with 90,000+ visits annually.
Breaking numbers down through the ESI 1-5 Triage system, 76% of our patients make up ESI 1-3 which speaks to the incredible depth of pathology and critically ill patients that our residents have the privilege of caring for.

Block Schedule
PGY1: Develop Foundational Skills
Interns spend 6 months in the ED. Remaining rotations are all on-site at York Hospital. We start the year off with a month-long orientation bootcamp to help with the transition.
PGY2: Build Confidence
This is a year of true growth with another 6 months in the ED. PGY2s are senior residents in the Trauma and Medical ICUs where they lead their corresponding services’ resuscitations. There are also entire blocks dedicated to honing individualized procedural and ultrasound skills. 1 month is spent at the CHOP pediatric ED with food stipend and accommodations provided.
PGY3: Lead the Team
PGY3s are encouraged to become true leaders. Beyond clinical skills we focus on the soft skills: managing department flow, medical command, leading resuscitation debriefs. 1 month is spent at our rural community ED affiliate, Chambersburg hospital. Accommodations are provided. Recent residents pursued elective rotations in Beirut, Australia and Alaska.
Details
Pediatrics
Exposure is longitudinal. We do not have a separate Pediatric ED so you will see pediatric patients every shift. 16% of our ED visits are pediatric. 2% of those are critical care patients. There is no PICU here so all pediatric resuscitation and procedures including intubation are performed by our residents. PGY1s spend 2 weeks on the NICU service. PGY2s spend 1 month at CHOP pediatric ED.
Trauma
PGY1s spend 1 month on the Trauma service while PGY2s spend 2 months. PGY2s on the Trauma service are team lead meaning they run the trauma resuscitation including performing any procedures while on the trauma service. They manage critically injured trauma patients in the TICU. ED residents on the ED service always manage the airway.
Elective
For residents pursuing fellowship, the elective month is flexible and can be moved to the PGY2 year to facilitate more exposure to critical care, toxicology etc.
Subspecialty Exposure & Interest Tracks
In-house Fellowships
We currently have both Ultrasound and Medical Education fellowships.
Expert Faculty Mentorship
We are proud of the diversity of the subspecialty experience that our faculty bring including Ultrasound, Simulation, Med-Ed, Pediatrics, Wilderness, Forensics, EMS, Disaster, Toxicology, Critical Care, Global Health and Palliative Care. Meet our faculty here!
Interest Tracks
Residents are welcome to join as many interest tracks as they like to expand their exposure to the growing number of subspecialties in Emergency Medicine. This individualized mentorship allows residents to develop a niche during residency to set them up for success at attaining a job and/or fellowship when they graduate.
Conference / Didactics
Weekly Protected Time
Residents have weekly conference every Thursday 7am-noon. The ED is staffed by attendings only on Wednesday night to support resident engagement during conference. Our approach to didactics is to minimize passive learning through lectures. Through simulation, flipped classroom, small groups and gamification, we believe active learning is the best way to improve retention. We have multiple break out rooms in addition to our high fidelity simulation center. A cadaver lab session is also held annually to practice rare procedures.
Residents Teaching Residents
Residents present at conference annually. PGY1s present a topic of their choosing. PGY2s present a Clinical Pathological Case Presentation with a faculty member. PGY3s lead our morbidity and mortality conferences. We also have quarterly joint trauma conference which is co-presented by EM and Surgery residents. Residency leadership supports those residents interested in innovative teaching. In the past, residents have written simulations and even built an entire procedural curriculum run over the course of a year.
Time & Money
Time Off
Residents receive 12 business days of PTO every academic year. You are not “charged” for weekends when you take 1 week off. In addition we also run a winter block schedule which gives residents a week off either over Christmas or New Years. Residents also receive 5 education days which can be used for studying, step exams, attending national conferences etc.
Shifts & Scheduling
We follow a 4 week block system. Shifts are 9 hours, which includes 1 hour of overlap. Interns work 21 shifts, PGY2-20 shifts, PGY3-19 shifts. During this hour the oncoming residents see new patients and outgoing residents finish charts and patient care before sign-out.
Money Matters
PGY1 salary starts at $65,500. This increases approximately $2,500 annually. Residents also receive an annual stipend of $1,500 for any educational resources (textbooks, laptops, electronic devices, board review courses etc.). If a resident is selected to present at a conference, all accommodations and flights are paid for in addition to a food stipend. Chief residents receive a shift reduction as well as a salary increase in addition to attendance at the SAEM chief resident forum.
Working as One
Clinical Pharmacists
Our ED employs clinical pharmacists who work side by side. with us in the ED almost 24/7. In addition to being a fantastic bedside resource, our pharmacists also regularly provide educational content to keep us up to date with the latest evidence based practices.
Behavioral Health Team
Our ED behavioral health team works tirelessly alongside us to support our patients with mental health crises. They help facilitate outpatient resources as well as inpatient placement. Our ED has a separate 9 bed behavioral health suite dedicated to supporting this important patient population.
Departmental Layout
Our ED has a unique layout where patient families and visitors enter rooms through a separate hallway. Only ED staff are allowed in the working areas. This approach offers better privacy for patients as well as a more cohesive team-based approach with our nursing colleagues and other staff. It is the perfect design to emphasize teaching!
Wellness
Family
Our residency family is just that, a family. Once a month a social gathering is hosted at one of our faculty’s homes. Significant others, children, pets are all encouraged! Residents often take advantage of Wednesday nights off before conference to socialize outside of work.
Life Outside EM
Downtown York is home to many fantastic restaurants as well as numerous opportunities for outdoor activities like biking, hiking and skiing. Baltimore is less than an hour away while both Philadelphia and Washington DC are within a 2 hour drive.
EduWellness
We believe that learning can and should be fun! Look at our Instagram for pictures of previous events like EM Quiz Bowl, Trauma Paintball, York Arcade EMlympics, EM in the WILD. We commit conference time to these events to make sure all our residents can participate!
